My Umbrella plant is growing too tall. Can I cut it back without killing it?

Is it a Schefflera or a Cyperus? Both are called umbrella plant -- although Schefflera is more often called umbrella tree.

The cyperus is mor grass like in its foliage, with an airy umbrella-like grassy inflorescence on a tall stem above the grass. The Schefflera has a woody stem and has about eight leaflets to a leaf, those leaflets arranged like spokes of an umbrella.

You can cut back either one. To shorten the cyperus just cut the flowering stems off -- but be aware that the next stems that grow will be just as tall. To make those stems shorter you would have to divide the base plant to keep the smaller side pieces.

The Schefflera can be cut back to just above any branch.

I cut back a schefflera to the ground (as a last resort before the compost bin) and got a whole new beautiful plant.

So good of you to let us know that -- there is no better source of courage than to hear that someone has already succeeded at what you're just thinking of doing!
